Update

Haven't really blogged in a while. While most of our contacts are contained within Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, and the such, blogging may have its benefits, but can sometimes be another channel repeating itself.

I think this post was just to make sure I remembered how to do this.

We're Here!

Well, we have been for a while...
We left Naples on a Sunday, very early in the morning. It was tough to sleep the night before, with being so anxious to make the trip, but we were up at 5 AM, loaded whatever was left, and we were out the door for the very last time.

The total trip time was 21 hours. It was supposed to take 17, but we took our time as we didn't really try to push the Penske truck too hard. It was a Ford, after all.

We drove about 11 hours up through Florida and Georgia and ended up in a small town called Calhoun, GA. It was nothing more than a clump of hotels and restaurants, but it served our purpose well. We had a great time driving through Atlanta's busy highway system, with all of its twists and turns. It was a little crazy with the Penske, but it was a lot of fun! We welcomed our rest in Calhoun.

In Calhoun, we went to a real fancy dinner at Ruby Tuesday. We ordered the salad bar. We were looking forward to a nice cold drink, too, to help us relax from the drive, but we weren't in Florida anymore! No alcohol served on Sundays in tiny Calhoun, GA! We managed without a problem, but it was my first experience with having to get used to that sort of thing.

The next night we packed up and hit the road. We felt refreshed and ready to go, because of course we stayed at the Holiday Inn Express that night. We could pretty much do anything!

So we hit the road, getting into Tennessee in less than an our, passing through Chattanooga and Lookout Mountain. It was beautiful at early sunrise and the drive brought back many memories. It was quite a stunning view to see the colorful trees on the tops and sides of the mountains and hills. The views over the valleys were also very impressive. It would have been nice to stop and soak it in, but we had to keep on trucking. Plus it was still early and really cold! It was also a lot of fun to drive up and down the mountainsides, through all the twists and turns. It was a great experience. Extremely dangerous at times, considering I was driving a packed 16' rental truck, and driving it like I drive my Tahoe, but we made it here alive. And it was awesome.

We kept going, getting through to Nashville. we didn't get a great view of the city, and the traffic stunk, so we just kinda kept on trucking. Jess has a couple college friends who are now in Nashville, so we may have a chance to get down there again sometime soon.

From Nashville, TN, we went through to Kentucky. Well, I haven't much to say about that...
What I did like about Kentucky was the multiple whiskey distilleries and Abraham Lincoln's birthplace, but all of that will have to wait for another day. We stopped in Somewhere, KY for lunch and went to a Subway. It was pretty much the most poorly made sandwich I've ever eaten. This "sandwich artist" was a little too abstract for my taste. But, since it is me, I ate it anyway. It still did the trick.

After lunch we went up to Louisville. That city pretty much has the worst highway system I have ever seen. The city seemed really cramped, distressed, and broke-down, and the roads were awful. I am sure there is much more to the area, but I am glad that wasn't our destination. I just hated driving through there.

Out of Louisville a few short moments, and we were into Indiana! I missed the welcome sign, due to a larger truck, but Jess called me to welcome me as we entered. From there, you guessed it, nothing but corn for a long time. It was the end of the season, apparently, so all the stalks were still standing, but waiting to be plowed over for in preparation for the next season. I guess that is how they do it. We drove for another almost two hours and we finally got to our new home of Fishers, IN!

We pulled up to our home, parked the Penske, and soaked it all in. After that one minute passed we went loaded up into the Tahoe and went to the rental agency to get the keys to the house. The drive around town was awesome. The trees had changed colors, leaves had fallen, and it was a great opportunity to soak up what our new city looks like. This wasn't new to Jess, and very new to me, but Jess is really happy to be home again, and we are really excited to experience all of this together!

Getting Ready

October 09, 2008

Seven days left until the truck is loaded and on the road. It is quite a mindgame having to deal with all the preparation, thinking, packing, job searching, and getting everything all set up for the big move. I hope to constantly update our information, sharing our thoughts and photos of us in our new home.

Jess and I will be moving into cold weather when we get there. The day we arrive, the low is to be 40 degrees, about the normal low for winter in Naples, four months from now. It will be quite a change. Fortunately I believe I have built up enough self insulation over the years, hopefully preparing me a little before it really gets cold.

Hope to keep you posted.
